The Spring Hair Detox
Stylist Note from Jen:
Every spring, I start hearing the same things in the chair: “My hair feels flat,” “it gets greasy faster,” or “it just won’t style the way it usually does.” Most of the time, it isn’t your hair changing; it’s buildup from the winter months. Dry shampoo, styling products, and even minerals from hard water slowly collect on the hair and scalp, and regular shampoo doesn’t always remove them completely. A simple clarifying reset this time of year can make a big difference in how your hair looks and feels.
When winter finally starts to fade, a lot of people notice the same thing happening with their hair. It suddenly feels heavy, flat, or like it just won’t style the way it normally does. Volume disappears, shine looks dull, and no matter how much you wash it, it doesn’t quite feel clean.
This time of year, your hair is usually dealing with months of buildup from winter habits. Between dry shampoo, heavier styling products, hats, indoor heating, and even minerals from hard water, your scalp and hair can end up coated with residue that regular shampoo doesn’t always remove.
Spring is the perfect time for a simple hair detox to reset everything.
Clarifying vs. Detox Shampoos
You may hear both terms used, but they are a little different.
Clarifying shampoos are designed to deeply cleanse the hair and remove buildup from products, oil, and minerals. They typically contain stronger cleansing ingredients that cut through residue more effectively than everyday shampoo. Think of clarifying as a reset button for your hair.
Detox shampoos usually focus more on the scalp. They may include ingredients like charcoal, clay, or exfoliating particles that help lift impurities, oil, and pollution from the scalp while still cleansing the hair. This is my favorite.
Both can be helpful, but clarifying shampoos are usually the best choice when hair feels heavy, dull, or coated with product.
Removing Winter Buildup
During the winter, most people unknowingly layer multiple things onto their hair and scalp.
Dry shampoo becomes a regular habit to extend time between washes. Styling products like hairspray, texture sprays, and creams get used more often. Hard water minerals from showers slowly collect on the hair. Even wearing hats or beanies can contribute by trapping oil and products closer to the scalp.
Over time, all of this buildup sits on the hair shaft and scalp. Regular shampoo often removes surface oil but doesn’t fully break down these layers.
That’s why hair can start to feel flat, greasy at the roots but dry at the ends, and harder to style.
When and How Often to Clarify
Most people only need to clarify once every three to four weeks, though it can vary depending on hair type and product use.
If you use a lot of styling products, dry shampoo, or have hard water, clarifying every two to three weeks can help keep buildup from accumulating.
To clarify properly:
Fully saturate your hair with warm water.
Apply the clarifying shampoo mainly to the scalp.
Gently massage it through the roots and allow the lather to move through the ends.
Rinse thoroughly.
Follow with a good conditioner or hair mask to restore moisture.
Because clarifying shampoos are stronger cleansers, they shouldn’t replace your regular shampoo. Think of them as occasional maintenance rather than an everyday product.
Why Your Hair Feels “Flat” This Time of Year
Flat hair in early spring is almost always a buildup issue.
When residue coats the hair shaft, it weighs the hair down and prevents natural movement and lift. The hair can also lose shine because buildup blocks light from reflecting off the surface.
At the same time, winter dryness can leave the ends feeling brittle, creating that frustrating mix of oily roots and dry ends.
A simple clarifying wash can remove those layers and instantly bring hair back to life. Many people notice more volume, better texture, and cleaner-feeling hair after just one reset.
A Simple Seasonal Reset
Just like we clean out closets and refresh routines in the spring, hair benefits from a seasonal reset too.
Clarifying helps remove months of buildup, restores natural shine, and allows your regular shampoos and conditioners to work the way they’re supposed to.
If your hair has been feeling heavy, dull, or harder to style lately, a spring detox might be exactly what it needs.
